Product Review: Coco Curls Shampoo & Conditioner

 

I hadn't been excited about a new product since I tried the Briogeo brand back in the summer. But Coco Curls brand has won a new fan!

At the Coco Curls & Convo event last month I was given a sample of this wonderful product. I've tried alot of products in my days as a natural hair blogger, but this one is at the top of my list. Janelle, owner of Coco Curls, worked very hard to create a product tht delivers what it says, ultimate hydration.

After removing my weave installation, I wanted to cleanse and deep condition my hair with something that promises hydration and cleanliness. Coco Curls gave me just that. PLUS it smells so good! Your hair will smell like chocolate pudding! You'll want to spend the rest of the day telling people to smell your hair.

I've never used a shampoo that left my hair feeling so soft and not stripped. It's a sulfate-free formula, and usually my hair doesn't respond to sulfate-free shampoos, but this time my hair was screaming "GLORAY!". It has great slip and a LITTLE goes a LONG WAY. You'll definitely get your money's worth with this product. The conditioner is even better. It's thick, luxurious, and smells amazing. My 4b curls loved it! After I rinsed my hair, it was so soft! 

Before I finished styling my hair I was already thinking of when I could wash my hair again. It was THAT GOOD!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Briogeo Hair Care

Listen, Linda, LISTEN! If you are looking for a new product that your hair will LOVE please make your way to the Briogeo aisle of life. I've known about this product for about a year. Please don't ask me why it took me THIS LONG to do a review. But let's get into it.

So the nice people at Briogeo sent me some samples of their product about seven month ago. I received the Be Gentle, Be Kind - Cleansing Shampoo, Curl Charisma - Curl Defining Conditioner, and Don't Despair Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask. When I tell you I was squeezing the package to get the LAST BIT of each product just because my hair love it so much!

First up, each product smells SO GOOD! The shampoo is SULFATE-FREE and it's amazing. My hair usually doesn't respond to sulfate-free shampoo, but this shampoo is ultra-moisturizing with a great amount of slip. It usually take a lot more product to cleanse my hair because it is very dense and very coily. I had a sample pack and I was able to get two washes out of the sample pack. Loves it!

Next, the curl defining conditioner that has no parabens, silicones or phthalates and all the fancy Nancy ingredients like almond oil, rosehip oil, and shea butter. It so moisturizing and it really helps define your curl. I couldn't believe it if it didn't happen on my head! If you do a light rinse you can use the conditioner as a leave-in as it continues to moisturize your hair. As with the shampoo, you don't need much to go a long way.

Lastly, I used deep conditioner - left it on for about an hour and my hair was looooooooving it.
It's fortified with ultra-hydrating avocado, sweet almond & argan oils, strengthening keratin protein, power-conditioning rosehip oil, soothing aloe, and super hair-essential vitamins B5, D, A, E and biotin - ALL THE GOOD STUFF. Since I'm dealing with heat damage and shedding from my fibroid surgery, it helped my hair with overall and added to it's manageability.

So, if you are looking to try a new product, I suggest you try Briogeo. You can purchase online or at Sephora. It's a bit on the expensive side, but as I've said, "A little goes a LONG way" and you'll get your money's worth out of one bottle.

ASHIYA'S HAIR DIARY: Give Me Luxury

During my most recent detox, I was challenged with removing the toxic products from my beauty ritual, which was relatively easy for me.  I use lot of oils and very little make up, but I did find room for improvement in my skin and hair care products.  During the purge, I was introduced to a new line of skin care that is absolute luxury.  The ingredients, the feel of the product and my face after each cleaning feels absolutely amazing.  And then I realized I wanted to same feeling for my hair.

Right now my current shampoo choice is still from the Shea Moisture line.  I do believe I've found the right shampoo cocktail for my hair at this stage.  After washing with a combination of their African Black Soap Deep Cleansing, Yucca & Boabab and Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention shampoos, I finally see the puffy free new growth I've wanted to see for the past few months.  I'm happy to find a combination to support my roots, but I cannot shake the feeling of luxury.  The results are all over my face.

The next line of shampoo I try has to be as clean as the Shea Moisture line, of course, but I wouldn't mind making more of an investment in my hair products.  I have tried my fair share of professional brands and there are a few that I like, but I'm looking for those clean, toxin-free brands that make you think twice before you put down the cash.  The ones that give you that brief, "I can't believe I spent this much on shampoo" moment.  I do know that price is not always an indicator of quality, but there are also times where you get what you pay for.  

It was my birthday week.  What can I say?

The deep cleansing shampoo came highly recommended from someone I trusted for washing locs and my first wash lived up to their expectations.  I did experience deep cleansing although I had to work a bit to lather.  Once I worked it into my locs, the African black soap played its part and help to clean and free my locs from product, workouts and everyday toxins.  My locs were left clean, not stripped, but I could definitely tell my hair needed to be replenished.

I shared this shampoos in our Christmas Wishes Giveaway, so it's secret I am a fan. I initially decided to give the raw shea butter a try to test the moisture retention.  This one worked easily into my locs and created a rich, full lather.  I know the previous wash helped, but I like the consistency of the Raw Shea Butter.  I think the thick, creamy texture creates a lather that worked right into the roots and the length of my locs.  While the African Black Soap does the cleaning work, the Raw Shea Butter left my hair with a light, sweet scent that I always get a whiff of at the perfect moment. And it delivered on the moisture retention.  My hair felt softer immediately and the sheen that comes with clean appeared as my locs dried naturally.

While I am still open to trying new shampoos, it feels good to have a cleansing and moisturizing option I can rely on again.  Stay close for my review of the remaining shampoos in the Shea Moisture line.

From Ashiya: Paddle Brush + Nature's Blessings Pomade
The best thing I did for my hair all year long was purchase a paddle brush.  Every time I use it, I ask myself how I made it this long without it.  After moisturizing my scalp, I use the paddle brush to massage product into my scalp and to encourage hair growth by stimulating my scalp.  While the goal is to strengthen my roots and ultimately my locs, I am driven by instant gratification.  I live for those massages now.  After years of trying to remedy a dry, itchy scalp in winter, Amber's advice was perfect. Shea Moisture's Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo

For years, I've worked on finding the right combination of shampoos for my locs.  After a little more education on hair health this year, I may not have found the ultimate, but I have found a new staple.  Shea Moisture's Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo is one of the shampoos that naturals happily share with me often, so I gave in when Walgreen's had them on sale earlier in 2013.  I gave in to ALL of them, but the Moisture Retention Shampoo was consistent despite the cleansing shampoo I used.  A quick wash and my locs are back to their best.  For now, this one is official.  

Dudu Osun Black Soap

If you've ever considered trying black soap, I've had my best experiences with Dudu Osun.  Some black soaps tend to leave my skin feeling stripped as opposed to clean, but I have not had that experience with this one. Made with natural plants and herbs, I initially intended to use it as a facial cleanser but immediately began using for total body because of that quality. Another reason I love it is because its easy to find at most local stores that carry shea butters, oils and other natural products.

 
From Candice: I'm putting in some homemade shea butter mix. It's the bomb. Hair. Body. All of me loves all of ingredients. Great for winter, but I made it a little lighter just in case the winner doesn't like weighty products. I love it because natural works better for me. And I made sure it smells amazing because... Why not?

Also, I'm giving awesome MetaGrip Bobby pins.  Regular pins are flimsy, and leave paint flecks in your hair. And it can take so many to hold up a style. And those little balls on the end peel off.  These pins are like super woman. Everyone should have some.

This deep moisturizing shampoo is AWESOME for nourishing you hair as you wash it. And sometimes, you really need to wash your hair and get it squeaky clean while moisturizing your situation. Ashiya's Hair Diary: Happy New Locs! Happy New Year!

As I look forward to a new year with the feeling of new locs, I can't help but think of the new maintenance plan Amber and I developed after she colored my locs.  There are a few new professional and DIY products I wanted to try and this seems to be the perfect time to work them in.

The most pressing goal for next year is to offer my scalp more love and attention.  At this point in my hair journey length makes strong roots a must.  While I had a regular appointment with moisturizing my scalp, adding the paddle brush has changed my life.  It is the perfect quick massage.  I also noticed my scalp felt more relaxed in between scalp treatment and received oil better.

I first read about herbal rinses last year when Esosa Edosomwan shared her hair routine with Loc'd Life Magazine.  After a little research on making them at home and application techniques, I'm looking forward to adding them to my routine.  Using the herbal rinses should help keep my locs fresh and clean while I allow them to free form.

The last thing I plan to do is up my scarf game.  Candice's discussion about forgetting her scarf made me realize my current choice is really not my best choice.  I have a beautiful silk scarf my Aunt gave me a few years ago that I rarely use.

"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray my tie in this scarf will keep..."

I'm sure she didn't intend for me to use it to protect my hair, but she would be happy to know I use it everyday as opposed to every now and then.  I just have to figure out how to tie in place.  I'll keep you posted.

DISCUSSION: Is Natural Hair Too Much Work?

If I had a dollar for every time someone said "Natural hair is too much work," I'd be able to buy myself something nice. (Not brand new car, but a really good Groupon or two.) Conversations usually start off with a hair compliment, and (if I'm sporting a nice twistout) talks about "good grades" of hair. You should see the looks on their faces when I tell them that I am not a "silky" natural. I usually show them pictures of my untamed hair and they can't believe I'm a nappy, kinky, coily natural... just like them. They usually end with someone explaining their return to relaxers by saying natural hair is too much work.

Properly caring for your natural hair may seem like a lot of work, but we at Natural in Nashville have found a solution. It's a genius solution that we're about to present to you. Are you ready to have your mind blown? Here goes: When you feel like taking care of your hair is a lot of work you should--

SIMPLIFY YOUR HAIR CARE ROUTINE!

Now that you've gathered yourself, we should elaborate. Many of us go through a stage in our natural hair journey known as the "product junkie phase". It's the stage where we try any and everything to get the Tia and Tamera hair. During this stage, your bathroom hair cabinet will be nearly impossible to navigate. And you will become convinced that you need to use 3 or more of these products regularly. No wonder people tend to think that caring for natural hair is a chore. When your wash day has 17 steps and 12 product applications for completion, OF COURSE you'll be overwhelmed. Hair should be cleansed, conditioned, moisturized, and protected. That's the short version of what your hair needs.

• Clean your hair so that it can breathe and not be weighted down with layers upon layers of products.
• Condition your hair so that it is optimal for styling and manipulation. Deep conditioning should be done regularly.
• Moisturize your hair whenever it is dry. The best moisturizer: Water. Aloe Vera is an excellent moisturizer as well.
• Protect your hair. Water evaporates from hair because it is exposed to the elements. Seal your hair with an oil or cream based product. This is especially important if your hair is prone to dryness.

Do you see how simple that is. Unless you are doing mini-twists or another time-consuming style, this should cut a lot of time from your hair routine. There is an option to include styling products, but that's a world of its own. One of my best twist-outs happened when I used all of the above steps, protecting AND styling my hair with a mix of shea butter and coconut oil. I'm not suggesting that you forsake all styling products. Everyone isn't meant to be a kitchen mixologist. But simplifying your hair routine really isn't hard. You don't need 12 products for 4 steps. You can keep your hair looking fabulous and have a life that isn't confined to your bathroom mirror.

Remember that you are not your hair. Life is not hair. It's pretty common to want to experiment. It took mos of us a while before we learned that there is no 'miracle product' that you can put on your hair once and it maintains your hair's moisture, condition, and shine until your next wash day. However, if hair becomes more of a chore than it is a joy, it's time simplify change. Delegate some the dreaded, excess time spent on your hair to things that actually make you happy. Read a book. Learn a new language. Sing in the rain (in your newly learned language). Go pet caterpillars. Simplify your hair care routine so that you can spend more time in your happy place and less time focusing on your hair.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Aphogee Deep Moisture Shampoo

Some time ago, I discovered that some of the products I used when I had a relaxer, continue to work well for me now that I'm relaxer free. Aphogee Deep Moisture Shampoo is one of those products. From the website:

I've been a fan of ApHogee products for a long time. My stylist would use the two-step protein treatment on my relaxed hair. My hair loves protein, so if your hair is protein sensitve, you may not want to try this line of products. The ApHogee system is designed to aid in giving you hair strength after environmental damage. I often recommend Aphogee products to friends who have color treatments, breakage, and/or dull hair.

So, I've had my hair in a protective style for a better part of the summer. Using synthetic hair for your installation is great way to cut costs and have a fun style. Extensions are a great way to play with color as well. Above, Amber (our new writer), installed these curly extensions using the crochet method. My hair is cornrowed underneath and the pieces are intertwined to achieve the fullness and style I wanted. But with using extensions, you must remember to take care of your REAL HAIR. That's why I turned to the ApHogee shampoo.

The formula is EXTRA moisturizing and I knew it could get within each cornrow, cleanse the hair follicle, and add moisture and softness. Plus, the shampoo smells really good, the formula is super creamy, and washed out easily without leaving residue. And, ApHogee Deep Moisture Shampoo is suggested to use on synthetic and human hair extensions! GENIUS! I follow-up with Pantene Natural Conditioner and a homemade coconut & castor oil mixture to seal in the moisture. This routine lets me know my hair is conditioned and clean under my install.

ApHogee Deep Moisture Shampoo is available at most neighborhood hair stores and Sally Beauty supply. The price is around 5.99 for a big 16oz bottle. One bottle usually lasts me six months - you don't need a lot to get the cleansing results. I will say that this is NOT A NATURAL shampoo. It has lots of sulfates and a high fragrance. If you are going the more natural route when dealing with you hair, this is not the shampoo for you.

However, if you are open to trying a shampoo with a good mixture of chemical support and natural ingredients, try this product. The formula touts Evening Primrose oil as one if its natural ingredients.

My business is starting to grow and I am overjoyed, but I broke one of my own client rules : always make time for self-care.  Lately, I have not had much to share in my hair diary because I was not honoring my normal self-care routine.  After some inspiration from a few different sources, I'm back and I've shifted my time with my hair to work better with my new schedule.
 

After a quick lesson from Kaneesha Martin on choosing hair products, I fought thoughts of becoming a product junkie again and decided to start trying professional salon brands as she suggested.  I let fate make my first product selection by going to the closest retailer of professional brands to see what was on sale.  Sally's Beauty Supply won.


Much to my surprise, that feeling of "I should try it all!!" never returned to me.  I realized I know my hair well enough at this point to rule out products that will not benefit me by reading the label well.  I decided to give the Silk Elements Megasilk Olive Shampoo and Conditioner a try.  The shampoo cleansed pretty well. I was also please with how easily the shampoo washed away after creating such a rich lather.  The Megasilk Olive Conditioner was acceptable.  It didn't seem to nourish my hair like other conditioners I've tried, although it did give some control to my new growth.  The both created a lovely, light scent, which I definitely appreciate.

Health Before Hair : Black Girls Run! Preserve The Curls

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Black Girls Run! Preserve The Sexy tour here in Nashville.  During the workshop, founders Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks shared their experiences with allowing their hair to grow naturally.  Like most women, they continually adjust to balance the work they put into maintaining their hair with their fitness routine.  When Ashley shared her frustration with not knowing what to do with her hair in the beginning of her transition, I realized it is easy to feel that way at any point.  Our understanding of our hair will evolve with us.

PRODUCT REVIEW: Carol's Daughter Chocolat Smoothing Collection

I was excited to do this review because we all love chocolate. (Chocolät if you're fancy.) Now, I'm going to be honest. But I do not want to have to create a "hair" expense section for my budget. I'm always on the hunt for hair discounts. So I wished upon a star and guess what was a featured product on Groupon last month? It was Carol's Daughter Chocolat Smoothing Collection. All 3 FULL-SIZED products were delivered to my doorstep for $25.00. I clicked "buy" so fast my finger got whiplash.

Frizz is a big issue for me. Sometimes when my hair is dry, it's a frizz ball. And other times when my hair isn't  dry, it is still a frizz ball. For reference, here is a blow out from earlier this year. I usually use the tension method to dry my hair.

This is about 2 hours after blow drying without the Chocolat system. 

Check out that frizz action. It's been one of the things that has remained consistent since I've been natural. Carol's Chocolat Smoothing system claims to reduce frizz by 70% and keep hair smooth for 72 hours. I was interested in seeing how my hair responded to the Carol's Daughter brand. I used everything according to the label instructions except for the blow-dry cream. I have way too much hair to use a dime-sized amount and work it through my entire head. But here's my review:

The Good

• I love the consistency of this line. Everything is thick and creamy, but not too hard to work thoroughly through my thick strands.
• I was expecting this product to smell like I'm shampooing with a Hershey bar. But it doesn't. It doesn't smell like chocolate. It smells like perfume laced cacao. Think cocoa butter with a hint of sugar and fairy dust extract. Win.
• I am IN LOVE with the twist tops on the shampoo and conditioner. You open it up by twisting the top. There are no aluminum/plastic seals that get stuck in the slotted caps. Just twist and squeeze. Easy.

The Not So Good

• Um... Did you miss the Groupon? Because if not, you save $6.00 and pay only $54.00 for the full sized set on the product website. I know you have to pay for the good stuff. And if you are able to do so.... this product worked wonders for me.

This is less than 1 hour after blow drying.  BIG DIFFERENCE.

The picture above is not a real twistout. I only twisted the hair as I dried it to keep it out of the way. I have only used this product once, but I'm already a fan. My hair is very hard-headed can be difficult to control. I wonder if there is room on the Carol's daughter bandwagon. The Chocolat smoothing system has me seriously considering jumping on board.

Product Review: Twist N' Locs Natural Oil Shampoo, Leave-In Conditioner, and Medicated Olive Oil Spray

For the past few weeks, I've been using a few products from the Twist N' Locs line and I may have found a new addition to my routine.  While my experience was not altogether perfect, I did find value in the line.  I tried out the Twist N' Locs Natural Oil Shampoo, Leave In Conditioner and Olive Oil Medicated Spray. Here's what worked, what didn't and why.

TIPS & Techniques: Traveling with your natural hair

Right now people are planning to make this an awesome and memorable summer. But if you have natural hair, you may be a little scared to take your baby on the road. If this is your first official travel season with your natural hair you are probably wondering how to condense your routine and make sure you bring the most important products on the road with you. So, I've decided to help you with this daunting task. Below I'll give you some tips for traveling with natural hair.

Let's talk about the products: No matter the airline, your bags may get lost, so make sure to get travel size versions of your favorite products. Your favorite product doesn't come in travel size, buy some sturdy plastic containers and transfer your favorite products to bottles like the ones above. Then, make sure to put those products in your carry-on bag. That way you don't have to worry about losing your products or having TSA throwing something expensive in the trash. It happened to me, and I almost had a heart attack.

Let's talk about style: When I travel, I tend to lean on a protective style to keep me looking fly for my trip's duration. However, a friend of mine was heading home to her father's 65th birthday party. She rocked two-strand twists while the she traveled, then the day of the party, she released her hair so that she could have wonderful stretched ringlets. So, that's a good way to keep your style fly  . . . while you fly.

Let's talk accessories: Any girl knows, it's a good deal to have lots of accessories on hand when your hair decides to go left (when you wanted it to go right). As much planning may go into your trip, sometimes we may not plan enough - sometimes the weather just doesn't cooperate. Having a supply of bobby pins, hair clips, scarves, and pretty pins is a great way to dress up your style. Just a couple of supplies will make it easy for your travel.

Let's talk water: If you are going on vacation this summer, most likely you will hit the beach. Even if you don't hit the beach you have to worry about washing your hair in unknown water. When swimming make sure to pre-wet your hair with leave-in conditioner before swimming and/or braid it before heading to the beach. Also check out UrbanBushBabes tips for swimming with natural hair.
