Roots & Rhythm: Snoop Dogg f. Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams - "California Roll"

In my house, we listen to music the way most people watch television. SWAN is constantly playing new music and I can tell when something is really good. After a few weeks, I find myself singing the songs or seeking them out on Spotify. It is obvious when something new has been filed into my musical memory.

That is exactly what happened when he introduced me to BUSH, the latest from Snoop Dogg produced by Pharrell. SWAN calls the sound "disco funk", in which Pharrell gave Snoop track after track that worked well with his flow. One of the things I love most about the project is the number of classic artists that appear on the album. You get energy from T.I., Kenrick Lamar, Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani, Rick Ross, Justin Timberlake and of course, Uncle Charlie Wilson. Everyone plays their part well to create Snoop's 13th album.

BUSH first made its way onto my running playlist with "This City" and soon after, "California Roll" became that jam. Pharrell managed to bring Snoop Dogg and Stevie Wonder together in perfection. It really is a great example of how California rolls.

Nia Long joins Snoop, Pharrell and Stevie Wonder in the video for "California Roll". If you know me at all, you know I LOVE this video! I love studying Ancient Egypt and this video is full of images from antiquity. Nia rocks the 1940s look and the Goddess look with ease.  From a slick do with a cute hat to the fullness of her hair as an Egyptian goddess, her styling is great. I also love the well placed message, "Be A Living, Breathing Goddess." Perfection!

And of course we have to show some love for Snoop's hair. He is certainly versatile when it comes to his hair. He has reinvented his look over the years with ease and as a woman, I have to respect that. Plus we've all seen the memes. Snoop's bonnet game is strong! And his current locs are a reflection of his love for his hair. They have grown past his shoulders at this point and I wonder how long he'll let them grow this time before we see another style emerge.

This project is also the one that made me look at Pharrell again with appreciation. Sometimes we get used to artists creating work that we truly enjoy and can loose our appreciation for them. I have a few more albums that I love a little bit more now, but this one is a much needed boost to my workout and running collection, reminding me how music translates into our life in the way we need to. The infectious beats and catchy hooks are sometimes just enough to help me round a corner or get through the last rep during my at home workouts. How could I not appreciate that?

Have you heard BUSH? What is your favorite track?
