ROOTS & RHYTHM: Donna Summer - "Love to Love You"

If you vibe with me on Friday, you probably know that I love to take a trip back to the 70s and 80s from time to time.

The Original Bad Girl, Donna Summer.
I think that time period influenced style, art and music in a way that is still evident today.  One of my favorites to check out is Donna Summer. A beautiful person with a beautiful voice, Donna Summers always seems to bring just enough extra to make you love her.

Donna Summer found her success in Disco helping to boost its popularity as a singer/songwriter. She brings the same drama to her performance that she shows in her clothing choice.  When I watch her perform, I see that same energy in many of the popular artists today. I mean, Donna was not afraid of a corset and funky sunglasses. In addition to music, Donna was also a painter.

Unfortunately, Donna passed from lung cancer in 2012, but her legacy lives on. In addition to being a chart-topping artist, Donna was also a mother of three daughters.  Her daughter, Brookly Sudano, is known for playing the role of Vanessa Kyle on the television series My Wife and Kids.

And if the rumors are true, we may see her story come to life through film. Kelly Rowland is also rumored to be up for the part, which gets my vote. I think Kelly could work it!

Donna Summer is one of those artists that is woven so tightly into music, we hear her without realizing it.  I always hear her songs in grocery stores and the mall or when I'm on hold. I knew of "Love to Love You", but it was years before I knew it was Donna.

Here's a classic performance from her in 1979.  What's not to love about her Egyptian inspired look?
