HAIR DIARY: Unraveling Time

Full+ Free: My Loc Inspiration For This Week.
Over the last week or so, I've done something I never thought I would do.

I've unraveled some of my locs.  It's not a major undertaking, but it has still been a tedious, slow process.  I decided to take this route to give me a bit more length to work with after cutting my locs.

A few years ago, I shared Chelsea Jackson's journey to freeing her locs and after consulting with a trusted stylist, I decided to follow the same protocol with a few adjustments.

Since my goal was to free a relatively small amount, the task doesn't seem so daunting.  I used conditioner I had on hand to soak the locs and used a rat tail comb and went to work.  After one session with the conditioner,  I worked with coconut oil and I must say, my hair loves it in every way.  I kept a spray bottle of water handy to help with moisture, but I try to keep the water to a minimum.

So that leaves me working to be creative with my hair.  This process is like the slowest unbraiding party in history with the same awkward styling options.  My go-to style right now is the "pin + ponytail" or the "forget it and scarf it" looks.

That "scarf it and forget it" look works best for yoga + workouts.
Chelsea referred to the unraveling process as a meditation.  I could not agree more.  It has definitely brought up memories of triumph and frustration in growing my first set of locs as well as the joys and trials I experienced during that time.

It was one of those moments when you can see the beginning and the end and appreciate them both.
