Hair Lust: Omelika Kuumba's Cultured Locs

I met Omelika Kuumba during my first year at Spelman College.  I came to know her as Sister Omelika during the semester I struggled through much of her African dance class.  By the end, Sister Omelika had revealed to me a beautiful truth: our spirits and emotions move when we move.

These images of her performing with Giwayen Mata capture her grace, strength and spirit perfectly. Literally translated, Giwayen Mata means "Elephant Women" and is the name given to an all-female dance, percussion and vocal ensemble Omelika co-founded in Atlanta, Georgia.

Omelika's locs are as lovely as I remember.  This bun is perfection!

If you're in Atlanta June 14-16, 2013 check out Omelika at Dance Africa Atlanta presented by Giwayen Mata.
