I have a confession: I am a Diet Coke junkie...and I think my hair knows it.
I go back and forth with my Diet Coke obsession. While a lot of people are getting their caffeine fix through coffee, I have been known to pour myself a mug of Diet Coke on a daily basis. I have quit numerous times and once I get over the initial slump I start to feel better. However, this is the first time since I went natural that I have "relapsed" back to a can a day habit. I've noticed that my hair and skin seem to be drier lately. After doing some online research I found that there is a debate on the effects of caffeine on hair. Most sources cited diet soda as a diuretic which can lead to dehydration. That would explain why my hair and skin constantly seem thirsty.
Now that we are experiencing colder weather here in Nashville, I am trying to figure out what my hair will need more or less of in the colder months. One thing won't change though and that is my hair's need for adequate moisture. And since a can a day habit of Diet Coke may be inhibiting that, we are going to have to break up again. I don't know why it's so hard though. I feel like Chris Rock's character in New Jack City.
"I tried to kick it but...it just be callin' me man. It be callin' me!"
I've tried to compensate with green tea and coffee but nothing feels quite as good as that carbonated, aspartame filled, brown acid poured over a mug of ice in the morning. Still it's not worth the condition of my hair, skin, and overall health. So here I am on day 1 of my new sobriety. Wish me luck.
