Melissa's Hair: Braids, maintaining your edges

Hola Chicas,

Wow, this is my first hair diary post! Yay! I'm so happy to have you follow me on my journey. I've been relaxer free since September 2009. Even though I love wearing my hair free, my key to success is keeping my hair protected with a weave or braids. Right now I'm rocking my box braids (aka Poetic Justice braids).

The biggest issue I have is making sure my edges stay moisturized and protected. I have thin and sensitive edges; my edges have been thin since I was a child, my mom says so. When I was relaxed, my edges were the thinnest part of my hair. But since I've been relaxer-free, my edges have come back nice and strong. However, wearing braids adds lots of tension to the hair, especially at the temples and the nape of your neck.

So what do I do.
  • I always sleep with my hair in a loose bun.
  • I spend equal amounts wearing my braids up and wearing my braids down.
  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! (see my product list below)
  • Take my braids down after about 2.5 months to give my hair a rest.
Sometimes wearing added hair can pull moisture away from hair, leaving the hair dry when you remove your braids or weave. After shower - I use Creme of Nature Lemongrass and Rosemary Leave-in Conditioner, it's the best! I use the Creme of Nature to seal in moisture then I cover my hair with 100% Coconut Oil. The coconut oil keeps my hair sealed and protected and adds shine to the braids. In addition, I love Motions Leave-in Conditioner Spray. It's another great way to moisturize my hair while it's braided.

So here's my moisture care list for taking care of my braids. Next week I'll talk about my wash and style methods!

Thanks for reading!
